1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose "The Impact of Cubism" video because i was unaware of what cubism was. Also the significant impact it had in the early early 1900's. I chose the "Expressionism" video because i thought it their would be more realistic paintings like Renoir and Monet.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The key concepts i learned in 'The Impact of Cubism" were that using different shapes and colors to create a chaotic reality. The images were dissected then reconstructed as in the painting the breakfast table. In the painting the nude on the staircase by Marcel Duchamp also showed movement and playfulness. The key concepts i learned in the Expressionism video was Edvard Munch paintings were very emotional and used mostly big colorful shapes to portray his subjects. In his painting the scream in depicts pure emotion. His paintings portrayed a pessimistic view of life because of his bad childhood memories. Franz Mark also used color for emotional effect as in the painting the blue horse. His painting were made of shapes that were simple and crude and he painted mostly animals because he liked the hidden things in nature. He also depicted cubism in his paintings.
3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The text talked more about Picasso more and his early life. It also discussed his view on women who were a presence in his art.
In the text the expressionist admired Edvard Munch's work.
4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I found that the art itself was confusing. The video stated that it was suppose to be disturbing and reassuring at the same time, i found it mostly disturbing.
I enjoyed The paintings of the animals by Franz Mark and his ability to express how they feel in a non traditional sense.
