Module 9

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I selected the two videos Albrecht Durer; Image of a Master and Valazquez because these are two artist i have never heard of. I was interested in learning about them.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
In Durer he was involved in the political aspects of the time because he was a member of the city council. Durer did paintings of political figures and occurrences as well as ordinary peasants. He was famous for wood cuts and inventive print maker. He was able to make several hundred prints at a time which enabled him to reach a larger public.
The key concepts of Valazquez is how this talented painter was allowed by his king to paint freely and befriend him. Valazquez painted many portraits of the king and always saw him in good light since they were friends. His paintings of the jesters  were especially beautiful. He had a way of using light to suggest depth in the subject and was able to display beauty under any deformity.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
He is noted in the book with dealing with the problems of perspective. In the video he became aware of perspective and landscape when he was traveling through the alps.
The video and book discussed the paintings of The Maids of  Honor. The video how ever was more in depth and showed a close up of the painting which was very informative.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I like the Durer video it gave me a good picture of the times in which he lived. I got a good sense of how painters were redeemed during this time. It was interesting learning how he made wood cuts in the print making and how well it was received. Also his invention of the grid was creative.
In Valazquez i found that his paintings were very vivid despite the lack of color.  His paintings of the jesters were very interesting since they showed the personalities and essence of the subjects.

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?
Using my hand as subject matter it caused me to take a closer look at my hands than i ever did before. I noticed all the lines, shapes, and textures.

2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?
I selected pencil because i thought it would be easier to use and less messy. Also i wish i would have selected charcoal because it would have came out darker.

3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?
I found slightly more difficult. I became lost and confused as to where i was in the drawing, hence why the hands looked so different.

4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?
The drawing of my right hand looks fairly good. It does resemble a hand. Well my left hand drawing shows detail but the proportions of it are wrong.

5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?
No because i did not enjoy it. It was very confusing and hard to do and the result was not as good as that of my dominate hand.

Module 8

1. Explain why you selected the video you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose The Greek Awakening: Art from the 5th Century BC because i have always been fascinated with the Greek culture from Art, politics, and just the general history. Its fascinating how many ideas that were created an used back then apply to today hundreds of years later. After watching the video i see even the basic concepts of art and design are studied to modern day.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
In the more than human video the main concept i learned was how the human and animal stimulus effect's how people create and perceive things.  The seagull example for the baby seagulls being mentally attracted to the red line on their mothers beak was very interesting. Also how humans in the nomadic age thought the same way when they created the Venus De Milo.
For the Greek awakening video one key concept i discover was how Pericles transformed the city of Athens form mostly wood structures to all Marble rock with his greatest achievement being the Parthenon.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The More Human than Human video related to the text by showing the evolution of art. It showed how the creation of the human form came from basic exaggerated form of the human figure to very accurate depictions of what the human body is like.  Much like the texts showing the artwork from the Neolithic age all the way to the time of the Roman empire.
In the Greek awakening video it was a more of in depth look and showed examples of what the reading briefly went over.  The book giving a definition of the Classical Greek period and the Hellenistic age but the video going into a more in depth description of what went on.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts? As a history buff i found the videos very interesting and informing. They were a different perspective on how Ive viewed the ancient  world. Its one thing to just read the reading the video add a visual perspective to the words and definitions being discussed.

Module 7 Blog

 Prairie Style (Frank Lloyd Wright)
1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
One of the key concepts of Frank Loyd wright style is how he incorporates the houses he builds to the landscape on where they are built.  His prairie style house has horizontal layers, so it looks flat like  a prairie and the walls of windows on one side make the house harmonies with nature. Even their front door reminds me of an entrance of an animal hole.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The video showed more of the natural surroundings of the house were incorporated in the house. While the text showed more how buildings were structured and the technical aspects that went along with building it.

3.  What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?
I enjoyed the film. I did not realize how much nature and architecture and that a building can standout or blend with its surroundings.

4. Why did you choose the films that you watched?
I chose Frank Lloyd Wright because he was the only architect that i have heard of.  I was curious to see his work and what made him famous.

Last Call for Planet Earth: Sustainable Development and Architecture
1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The  key concept in the video Last Call for Planet Earth was the need to become more environmentally conscious and make buildings more sustainable. By trying not to deplete our natural resources buildings are made to make use of our natural resources. An example is windows and sky lights which help with solar heating and high ceilings help with natural light. Also taking advantage of existing buildings and refurbishing them to become sustainable and preserving the history.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The text talked about green architecture in different ways to use building materials to increase energy.  The text also discussed how to increase public awareness of environmental concerns.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?
My opinion the film is how architects are doing more when creating buildings to be more sustainable and environmentally conscious.  They are using very innovative ideas like using the sun to provide hot water and putting in grass roots to prevent over heating.

4. Why did you choose the films that you watched? I chose this video because i have an interest in the environment. I have also wondered and concerned how so many buildings are demolished and not fixed up.

2. When looking at Project #1: (Elements and Principles), did you agree with the element or principle the artist listed with the images? Did you see other elements and principles in the images?
I agreed with most of Shayla Jackson's images  except for i thought that the table setting should have been used for pattern. The wedding party was a good example of line in my opinion.
In Emily Hirsch project 1 i really liked her images but i would have not used the image of the tree as the element line but rather as texture.

3. When looking at Project #2: Where there any images in the Peer Blogs the same as your own? If yes, what were they? Where the reasons the image was selected the same or different as your own?
No because i did not do project 2.

4. Where there any images that your Peers selected that pique your interest now? If yes, what are they and what is your connection with them? What would you want to know about them?
Feeling His Oats, 1988 Acrylic on Canvas art work by Robert Colescott is an interesting painting, and i am curious about his subjects and why he painted them so colorfully, literately and figuratively.

5. What do you think about  the process of reading your peers reflection? Do you find this to be a valuable in your learning?
it was good to know how others viewed their projects. i was interested to find any similarities in the way i viewed things.

6. Check your Blog and read comments posted by your Peers. Do you find their comments helpful?
Unfortunately no one has commented on my Blog posts.

Mod. 6 Blog

Through the eyes of a sculptor
1. The key concepts of the eye of a sculptor is the extensive process it takes a group of artists to create a sculptor. The many steps that are involved  from the drawing to the clay sculptor then the plaster mold and finally the marble replica.

2. The text talks more about the steps as previously stated in greater detail.

3. I liked the film and was surprised at tall the people involved in making the final product. Also where the marble comes from and how hard it is to excavate it. How the artist can see a statue in the marble and that they say the stone decides fifty percent of what it will be. This brings the statue to life.

Glass and ceramics
1. The different chemical processes that are involved in creating glass and ceramics intrigued me most. Also the many uses of ceramics and how glass is replacing stone in buildings because of its great advantages with heating, cooling, and acoustics.
2. The text did not go into detail of all the ways ceramics was used like its use in the medical field.
3.I did not enjoy the film because it became to technical and had went to in depth with the chemistry of how it was made. These products come from the earth originally and how they used in many other areas besides art.
